Don Bissett, LPC

Supervision and Training

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Colorado, a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and am in process of completeing the requirements for Certification as an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) Therapist.  Supervision can be individual or group.  Clinical data is required for each session and may include audio, video and/or written records of sessions.  Therapists are required to maintain their own liability insurance.

Supervision Toward the Following:

Colorado Licensure (LPC or LMFT)

Clinical Membership in AAMFT

AAMFT Approved Supervisor Status

Exam Preparation for LMFT and LPC Exams

EFT Training: I am not certified as an EFT therapist and hours of supervision with me cannot be counted toward certification as an EFT therapist.  However I am in training as an EFT therapist and strongly endorse the methodology of the EFT model.

Supervision to meet the requirements for all licensures and certifications will include an emphasis on the following:

  • The creation of a theraputic alliance with each individual present in a counseling session including those present for marital and family therapy
  • An affirmation of the individual’s capacity to grow and change.  The symptoms presented by the client’s are always seen as a solution to a problem which might have been effective at an earlier time.  DSM IV formulations occupy little space in my supervision and therapists who like to work with a medical model may not not find me a good fit for their supervisory needs.
  • An emphasis in my supervision is placed on attachment theory and how attachment needs are met and unmet in the context of relationships.
  • Therapists who are aware of and engaged with their own emotions are in a better position to guide and comfort individuals, couples and families in such explorations.  Therapists who are aware of their own attachment longings and attachment fears will be better prepared to understand and appreciate the experience their clients bring to therapy.
  • Supervision will be characterized by mutuality, collaboration and respect in order to create an atmosphere that allows for creativity and risk-taking on the part of the supervisee.  An emphasis of supervision will be on the evolution of the supervisee into a therapist who will integrate cognitive formulations into a theraputic style that demonstrates empathy and a genuine alliance with the client.
